Alliance for Choice Calls for Immediate Action on Abortion in Ireland
Alliance for Choice calls for immediate action in both jurisdictions on abortion access in Ireland.
In solidarity with our sisters in the Republic we fully support their demands for an immediate referendum to repeal the Eighth amendment following this weekend’s reports of a suicidal rape victim being denied her legal right to an abortion by the Irish State under the current guidelines.
We continue to call for the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland and demand the guidelines on the termination of pregnancy be published by the Department of Justice immediately.
Alliance for Choice spokesperson Emma Campbell commented “Since the horrific details of the case of a vulnerable asylum seeker woman in Ireland who was pregnant as a result of rape, requested an abortion due to risk of suicide, and instead was forced through a system of panels and interviews which prolonged the pregnancy and finally ended in an unwanted early caesarean delivery, we at Alliance for Choice Belfast feel it is right to stand in solidarity with every woman living in Ireland.”
Alliance for Choice are holding a protest rally at the treatment of this woman on Wednesday 20th August 6-7pm at Belfast City Hall in support of all our sisters on the island of Ireland who are forced to jump through demeaning bureaucratic hoops to access a termination – even WITHIN the parameters of the law.
Notes to editor:Alliance for Choice is a cross community organisation that campaigns for the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland. Much of our work has been about making heard the voices of the tens of thousands of women from Northern Ireland who have had abortions in England and elsewhere since 1967.
